Accessibility statement

BHL Assessments Ltd wants this website and the assessment tool behind it to be usable by everyone. We are working to WCAG 2.2 level AA as our target.

We are not claiming conformance to that standard. The site has not been audited by anyone independent of us and has not been tested with screen readers. This statement sets out only what we have genuinely checked and what we know is still untested — we would rather tell you that plainly than publish a claim you could not rely on.

What we have actually checked

These are automated checks that run on every change, so they cannot quietly stop being true:

  • Colour contrast. Every critical text and background pairing in the site’s colour system is measured against the WCAG AA thresholds in our test suite, and body text on the page background is held to the stricter AAA ratio. The focus indicator is checked against the 3:1 non-text threshold.
  • Heading structure. Every public page is checked to have exactly one top-level heading and no skipped heading levels.
  • Links. Every internal link on every public page is checked to resolve to a real page, and every link is checked to have text a screen reader can announce — no empty or placeholder links.
  • Landmarks and language. Pages are built with a header, navigation, main content and footer landmark, and the page language is declared as British English.
  • Layout ingredients on small screens. Our tests reject the things that cause sideways scrolling — fixed widths wider than 320 pixels, text forced not to wrap, and tables that are not inside their own scrolling container.

What is built in by design

  • Keyboard use. Every control is a native interactive element rather than a scripted imitation, one visible focus style applies across the whole site, and a skip-to-content link is the first thing you reach with the Tab key on every page.
  • Motion. The site honours your operating system’s reduced-motion setting, and disables animation and smooth scrolling when you ask for it.
  • Forms. Every field has a visible label rather than placeholder text standing in for one; the error and confirmation messages on the sign-in, sign-up, activation, password-reset and checkout forms are marked up as alerts or status messages so assistive technology announces them; and expanding controls such as the questions on our FAQ page report whether they are open or closed.
  • Answers are never colour alone. Where the tool shows a red/amber/green judgement, the colour is always accompanied by a word and a shape, so nothing depends on distinguishing colours.

What we know is not covered

  • No independent audit, and no screen reader testing. Everything above is either an automated check or a design decision. Nobody outside the team has assessed the site, and it has not been tried with JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver or any other assistive technology. Until that happens we do not know how well it works in practice, and we are not going to guess.
  • The small-screen checks are checks on the code, not on the rendering. They stop the known causes of horizontal scrolling from entering the code. They do not prove the finished pages lay out correctly at 320 pixels wide, because they do not open a browser. Real-viewport testing at each breakpoint is outstanding.
  • The automated page checks cover the public pages. The signed-in assessment tool is built from the same components, shell and colour system, and inherits the contrast and focus work, but it is not covered by the same page-by-page sweep for heading order, link resolution and layout.
  • PDF documents. The certificates and Project Packs the tool generates are not tagged for screen readers. The same information is available as ordinary web pages inside your account, and improving the documents is on our list.
  • Zoom and text spacing. The layout is built in relative units so it should reflow when text is enlarged, but we have not tested it at 200% and 400% zoom or with custom text-spacing settings.

Tell us what does not work

If any part of this site or the tool is difficult or impossible for you to use, email info@bhlassessments.co.uk and tell us what happened and what you were using. We will acknowledge it within five working days, in line with our complaints procedure. Fixing a real barrier takes priority over this statement reading well, and if you tell us about something we have missed we will say so here.

This statement was prepared on 29 July 2026 and revised on 19 September 2026, and describes the site as it stands on that date. It will be revised again when the outstanding testing above is carried out.
